Ensuring Connectivity via Data Plane Mechanisms

چکیده
We typically think of network architectures as having two basic components: a data plane responsible for forwarding packets at line-speed, and a control plane that instantiates the forwarding state the data plane needs. With this separation of concerns, ensuring connectivity is the responsibility of the control plane. However, the control plane typically operates at timescales several orders of magnitude slower than the data plane, which means that failure recovery will always be slow compared to data plane forwarding rates. In this paper we propose moving the responsibility for connectivity to the data plane. Our design, called DataDriven Connectivity (DDC) ensures routing connectivity via data plane mechanisms. We believe this new separation of concerns — basic connectivity on the data plane, optimal paths on the control plane — will allow networks to provide a much higher degree of availability, while still providing flexible routing control.

The show must go on: Fundamental data plane connectivity services for dependable SDNs
Software-defined network (SDN) architectures raise the question of how to deal with situations where the indirection via the control plane is not fast enough or not possible. In order to provide a high availability, connectivity, and robustness, dependable SDNs must support basic functionality also in the data plane. In particular, SDNs should implement functionality for inband network traversa...

GABAergic neurons of the thalamic reticular nucleus (nRt) provide thalamocortical relay neurons with feedback inhibition that influences sensory processing and thalamocortical rhythm generation. Mutual interactions between reticular neurons coordinate oscillatory activities developed within the network during normal sleep and in absence epilepsy, but the chemical versus electrical nature of the...
متن کاملScalable Testing of Context-Dependent Policies over Stateful Data Planes with Armstrong
Network operators today spend significant manual effort in ensuring and checking that the network meets their intended policies. While recent work in network verification has made giant strides to reduce this effort, they focus on simple reachability properties and cannot handle context-dependent policies (e.g., how many connections has a host spawned) that operators realize using stateful netw...
متن کاملC3: Internet-Scale Control Plane for Video Quality Optimization
As Internet video goes mainstream, we see increasing user expectations for higher video quality and new global policy requirements for content providers. Inspired by the case for centralizing network-layer control, we present C3, a control system for optimizing Internet video delivery. The design of C3 addresses key challenges in ensuring scalability and tackling data plane heterogeneity. First...
متن کاملSurvey on QoS Management of VoIP
In this paper, we present a survey on management mechanisms used for ensuring the Quality-of-Services for Voice-over-IP applications. We first address the motivations of QoS management for VoIP. We then partition the system into two management planes: data plane and control plane, and describe mechanisms in each plane respectively. In data plane, we cover several important techniques including ...
